Privacy Policy for Hide My Text
Last updated 2026-01-01T00:00:00.000Z
Effective date: November 1, 2026
Hide My Text is a browser extension that lets you choose text and websites, then blur, replace, or delete matching text in pages displayed by your browser. This policy explains what the extension handles and where it is stored.
Information the extension handles
The extension does not require an account. It does not include analytics, advertising, or code that sends your information to the developer or to an external server. Its operation is local to your browser.
Depending on how you use it, the extension handles:
- Text you choose to hide, item names, website scopes, per-item actions, and replacement strings. The vault containing your chosen text, names, scopes, and per-item settings is encrypted before it is saved in browser extension storage.
- Your default action and default replacement string. These preferences are saved in browser extension storage without encryption.
- The current page's host name and page text needed to find and apply your rules. The browser runs the extension on pages and frames where you have granted access. The relevant rules are passed locally from the extension's background component to its content script for matching; they are not sent to the developer or an external server.
- A visual-theme preference, saved in the extension popup's local browser storage.
How information is protected
The vault is encrypted using AES-256-GCM. The encryption key is derived from your master password using PBKDF2-SHA-256. The master password itself is not saved by the extension. The derived key is kept in browser session storage to preserve the unlocked state during the browser session.
Encryption does not protect information while it is being used. Matching text and rules are available to the extension in browser memory on pages where they apply. Blur is cosmetic: blurred text remains in the page and may be readable through browser developer tools or page behavior. Replace and Delete change displayed page content, but are not a guarantee that a website or other software has not already read or stored the original text.
Website access and page content
The extension requests access to all websites so it can apply your rules on the pages you select. You can choose specific website scopes or all sites. When a rule applies, the extension scans page text locally, including content added dynamically, and modifies matching text according to your selected action. The extension does not keep a browsing history or transmit page content to the developer.
A hostile website may try to infer a hidden value by testing guesses against its own page, especially when a rule applies to all sites. Use specific-site scopes for sensitive values. Do not use this extension as a password manager or as the sole protection for credentials or other critical information.
Storage, retention, and deletion
Information remains in your browser's extension storage until you remove it from the extension or remove the extension. The extension's Reset function deletes the saved vault and preferences. Reset is irreversible from within the extension. Deleting data from the extension cannot guarantee removal of copies that may exist in browser or device backups managed outside the extension.
Sharing and sale
The extension's code does not sell, rent, or share your information with the developer or third parties. Your use of websites and browser services is separately subject to those providers' own privacy practices. The browser vendor may process information under its own policies.
Children
Hide My Text is not designed for children and does not knowingly collect information from children. The extension has no account or data-submission service through which the developer receives personal information.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated when the extension's behavior or applicable requirements change. The latest version will be published at the same privacy-policy URL. The effective date above identifies the current version.
Disclaimer
The extension is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law. It may contain errors, fail to hide text, expose information, or cause unintended changes to displayed pages. You are responsible for deciding what information to enter, choosing appropriate website scopes, maintaining a strong master password, and keeping independent backups of information you cannot afford to lose.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, the developer disclaims responsibility for loss, disclosure, unauthorized access, or other damages arising from use of or inability to use the extension. Nothing in this policy excludes or limits liability or consumer rights that cannot legally be excluded or limited.
